We’ve all played the game. One, two, three shakes, both throw and Paper covers rock. Or rock smashes scissors. Or scissors cut paper. Sometimes a neutral throw shows up. Rock verses rock, etc. We can solve problems in free form practice similarly but it needs to be ingrained in practice or it wont come out spontaneously when called.
So whats it take to have the finesse of Rock, Paper, Scissors tactical practice theory working for you? I hope that got a laugh. We say and write things in hopes of them being entertaining and valuable. Ha. At first if we can recognize what they are doing we can then employ a tactic.A degree of observation, awareness is needed. Unless its a slaughter and you can go right through them you’ll need to read them and pick your battles.
What works? It’s really an observation tool and then usage… An unlock. If someone, your opponent, training partner, attacker, is moving big and or strong, the answer to dealing with that is yielding and getting out of the way. We don’t want to receive their strength and power, their impacts, grabs. If they are moving with agility, getting out of the way – you’ll need to strike out more quickly, retargeting, adjusting more to catch them. Likewise if they are retargeting, you’ll need bigger moves to get through. Cutting through the retargeting.
Big, Strong - - > Evade wins
Evading, Yielding - - > Retargeting, Smaller faster connections wins
Retargeting, Smaller faster - - > Bigger, Long stronger movements cut in, through
This concept is just an analogy. A training tool. Work in the mind for tactics, and a way to break down characteristics in movement, in martial arts and fighting. So change, change, change. I remember John Perkins telling me long ago, thet “I win not because I’m better than them, but because I change before they do”. It may have been a contextual remark but it stuck with me to not try to hard at something not working well. Just do something else. It’s right behind the first expression. Often part of the same gesture. Just adjust and let it keep going where it needs to.
